Three
female portraits decorate the windows
on the garden side of the castle and
their eyes recount the history of a life.
On the right, a girl bears on her brow
fruit full of the promise of life. Her
eyelids lowered in modesty try to conceal
an eager gaze into the future.
A child, symbol of fertility, and roses,
the arms of Jean Vassal, the builder
of the chateau, the future here lies
in the features of a lovely proud young
woman gazing resolutely forwards. This
is the portrait found on the label of
the Engarran Sainte Cécile vintage.
The last of the three ages under an
Italian headdress is toothless and wrinkled;
the eyes of old age hold a message for
youth: "make hay while the sun
shines".
